Myanmar Emergency
Several months on, the UN Refugee Agency continues to distribute aid to those affected by cyclone Nargis. 1.6 million people were displaced and hundreds of thousands have been without shelter.
To date, the Emergency Shelter Cluster has distributed a large quantity of items which includes:
428,000 plastic sheets, 20,000 community tools kits, 175,000 blankets, 597,000 mosquito nets; 259,000 jerry cans and 63,000 kitchen sets.
UNHCR is looking to provide assistance for a total of 250,000 people.
Upon arrival in Yangon, relief items have been transferred quickly to international NGOs for distribution in the cyclone affected areas.
UNHCR's emergency team has been supporting the existing Myanmar-based staff to bolster the office's capacity to receive and distribute the tons of relief items which have arrived and carry out assessments in the affected areas.

Although the UN Refugee Agency is not usually involved in natural disaster relief, it has responded to the cyclone crisis because of the scale of the devastation, the urgent needs of the victims and the proximity of its relief supplies to Myanmar.
UNHCR is part of the joint UN emergency response to the cyclone and is the lead agency for shelter in the initial phase. We will provide shelter for 250,000 people affected by the disaster.
UNHCR has been operating in Myanmar for more than 2 decades and has extensive experience working with the government and other partners in delivery of aid. UNHCR has 70 staff on the ground in the country.
