Crisis in DR Congo

After more than a decade of strife a fresh outbreak of fighting has now forced an additional 250,000 people from their homes.

UNHCR is responding to the crisis. Emergency aid has been distributed near Goma, the capital of North Kivu. There are 135,000 displaced people in the six UNHCR-run camps near Goma. The number of displaced people continues to rise. The population of Kibati camp, located close to Goma, grew from 15,000 to some 65,000 people in the space of a few days.

Many of the displaced are being voluntarily transferred to safer camps such as the Mugunga III site. UNHCR and partners have cleared the ground and started building accommodation blocks and urgent infrastructure, including reception and shelter facilities, access roads and latrines. A water distribution system is being built, with six standpipes now in operation to supply up to 10,000 people.

Many Congolese fleeing the fighting have headed towards Uganda looking for safety. This includes Nakivale Refugee Settlement where many Australian donors have provided support through our Star Appeal. To date around 10,500 Congolese have sought refuge in Uganda, 3,000 of which have already been transferred to Nakivale.

An urgent need

There are 16 UNHCR-assisted sites in North Kivu sheltering some 100,000 people, plus more than 40 makeshift encampments housing tens of thousands of civilians. Altogether, there are more than one million internally displaced people in North Kivu.
