South Sudan Returning Home Appeal

When 17-year-old Simon stumbled across the Ugandan border, UNHCR was there.

It was 1994, at the height of the bloodshed in South Sudan. When his father was shot and his mother and brother were killed in attacks on his village, young Simon fled barefoot through the rugged hills in a desperate bid to reach safety. At a refugee transit centre just inside the Ugandan border, UNHCR gave him shelter and protection.

Simon was to spend the next 14 years in Ugandan refugee settlements. And all that time UNHCR was there, providing the basics of survival: shelter, water, food and health care. When he married Rose, a young woman from his South Sudanese village, it was UNHCR that provided the clinics and schools for their five children.

Now, finally, after fourteen years, peace has returned to South Sudan and Simon and Rose have taken their young family home.

This is what we mean when we talk about our ‘cycle of refugee support'. In Simon's story, you see the full spectrum of UNHCR's work  - the agency's unique mandate to protect and assist refugees at every stage of their ordeal, from the time they flee their homes until they return or resettle in a new country.

By supporting Australia for UNHCR, you help to provide this critical lifeline for displaced families, enabling them to survive in these often hostile, poor and isolated places.
