Afghan Shelter Appeal
In 2007 UNHCR helped more than 350,000 Afghans return home. However this feat has been tempered by the harsh realities back in Afghanistan.
Afghans who are returning home are immediately confronted with no land, shelter, jobs, schools, or health care - without this assistance they cannot restart and sustain their lives. Many of them are going back to destroyed homes and villages and are going to need shelter assistance before winter weather sets in. The security situation is also a grave matter for returnees.
Afghans are returning in huge numbers to their country since relative peace has been restored. They have come back with tremendous hope and optimism to rebuild their homes and their country.
As part of its reintegration aid to returnees, UNHCR has provided 10,000 shelter kits in 2007 to the neediest families. It also supports water and sanitation programs and is building and repairing 375 water points and 525 household latrines throughout the country.
However many more still need support to rebuild their homes. The basic plan is that families will make the necessary mud bricks themselves. Once they've rebuilt their homes up to about shoulder height, UNHCR and its partners will then hand over the kits so that returnees can construct the roof and the necessary support beams.
Since 2002, UNHCR has helped more than 4 million Afghans return home. UNHCR has the infrastructure on the ground to help deliver this support.
If you'd like to help Afghan returnees put a roof over their head this winter, donate to the Afghan shelter appeal. You'll be giving grateful people the chance to help themselves.
